Are you bewildered with starting a flatclassroom project?

My year 12 class had been studying virtual teams as part of their theory work, when I noticed on twitter that students were required to be part of the sounding board process for the Flat Horizons Project. What better way to learn the theory than to practise it! That was my introduction to the Flat Classroom Projects and both the students and I were hooked!
Since that time, my classes have been involved in three flat classroom projects, the dig… Continue

Walking a Wiki - Marathon style

It can be quite overwhelming working with wikis, especially if it is the first time. Some of my students are not even familiar with wikipedia, so the following task is completed in the very early stages of this project to ensure that they know what the biggest wiki of all invovles. It also gives us an insight into wikepedia type editing.

Walking a Wiki - Marathon Style

1. Goto wikipedia and describe what you see on the startup page. Why has this be… Continue

Looking forward to a new project

Approximately 12 months ago, I read a tweet on twitter, requesting people to become involved as a sounding board for the flat horizons project. As it sounded
interesting and as my year 12 students were studying virtual teams as part of their course I enrolled in the project. Thus began some wonderful learning experiences. Five of my year 9/10 girls enrolled in the flatclassroom project at the end of 2008. Three girls and I were then fortunate enough to attend… Continue

The sounding board meets the student summit

Another extension of the flatclassroomproject occurred today, when Kim Cofino's grade 5 students in Bangkok, who were part of the sounding board, met my five girls in Australia, using skype for videoconferencing. Although the audio dropped at times, the video was clear, and Kim's young students confidently came to the camera and asked some great questions about the flatclassroom pr… Continue

Thanks, Anne. Montessori is a method of teaching based on the work of Dr Maria Montessori, an Italian physician who lived from 1870 to 1952. It's goal is encouraging independence in children rather than the transfer of curriculum, which happens more as a by-product. Hands-on learning, mixed-age classes and child-sized furniture were among Montessori's innovations. A good website for more info is www.jola-montessori.com/mc/content/what_ld.php

I teach in California, but I am originally from Brisbane. I'm really interested in connecting my classes with classrooms in Australia especially, but have had lots of difficulty finding partner classrooms in the past. I hope this will work better.

Hi Anne. thanks for the tip. I stumbeledon that ning yesterday and watched the video. i'll love the notion of provoking the students into discussion. A couple sounded a bit defensive and misunderstood in terms of how they learn in this environment. It is such an insight into their world read their comments. Keep up your great work - it's so important.

Hi Anne,

It was such a pleasure for our students to Skype with your wonderful girls! Not only did they have all of their thoughtful questions answered, but they got a fabulous introduction to Australia and Australian culture!

Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day (and lunch!) to chat with us!

Hi Anne - I had signed on as the Web 2.0 expert advisor. We need to get all the students rounded up and registered on the Web 2.0 Ning page - much like herding cats I believe.
