- Hi, I am a teacher in a small rural prep to year 12 school in Australia. I teach years 2 to 12 information technology and am passionate about the use of web2.0 tools. This year I am have also got teacher professional leave together with Jess McCulloch to lay the eplanks in a virtual school (ie flat classrooms)

Flattening the Student Summits

School in Victoria, Australia, finishes at the end of November or early December, for students in years 10 -12. This causes some angst, as students involved in the flatclassroom project, need to be completely finished their videos etc before they leave. The pressure can be extremely high and it often means that the final tidying up and reflections are not completed.

As the flat classroom projects enter the final weeks, levels of anxiety start to run rather high amongst the student body – anger, frustration, confusion, indecision, lack of understanding, complacency are many of the emotions and feelings that run high at this stage.
So, as a teacher I need to coax, cajole, coach, encourage, teach all over again, explain, facilitate, survive etc to keep the project’s momentum going.

My year 12 class had been studying virtual teams as part of their theory work, when I noticed on twitter that students were required to be part of the sounding board process for the Flat Horizons Project. It can be quite overwhelming working with wikis, especially if it is the first time. Some of my students are not even familiar with wikipedia, so the following task is completed in the very early stages of this project to ensure that they know what the biggest wiki of all invovles. It also gives us an insight into wikepedia type editing.

I teach in California, but I am originally from Brisbane. I'm really interested in connecting my classes with classrooms in Australia especially, but have had lots of difficulty finding partner classrooms in the past. I hope this will work better.
