Building bridges for the future through collaborative projects

I knew I wanted to become a teacher when I was in the 9th grade. I attended the Essential High at Paschal High School in Fort Worth, Texas, a small school-within-a-school, somewhat like ISA, and one of the first 10 Coalition of Essential Schools in the country.
After earning my master’s degree in English and Secondary Education at Texas State University, I started teaching at The International School of the Americas in 1997. I taught 12th-grade English for 5 years and then 9th-grade English for 3 years before I became a literacy specialist for the district. After two years supporting reading and English teachers in North East ISD, I went back to Texas State University to teach pre-service English teachers and mentor student teachers.
In 2008, I returned to ISA as the Internship Coordinator, a position which gave me the pleasure and privilege of helping students pursue their passions and plan for their futures. In 2009, I coordinated the ISA Internship Program half time and spent the other half of my time developing and teaching the 21st-Century Global Leadership Course at ISA. This year, in addition to teaching 21st-Century Global Leadership, Humanities, and Writing 4 Real, I'm serving as the Dean of Instruction for English and Social Studies. I'm really grateful for this opportunity to continue to learn from and with teachers and students at the school I have always called "home."
