Flat Classroom Project

Building bridges for the future through collaborative projects

Creating this project has definitely to be both difficult at some times and quite enjoyable in others. I have many skills and facts that will definitely benefit me for the future. This project has really made me think twice about we use the internet in our lives today and how different our lives without it.

During the investigation stage of this project, I think that I did very well at laying out my design brief and specifications. I also explained the problem in detail and how it related to our society. I also made research notes, which later benefited me when I made my video. And yet, there was only one problem here and that is that I made a questionnaire, and yet, when I put it on the ning, noone replied. And, because of that, I really had no idea about other people’s outputs on uploading and so I couldn’t incorporate that later in the project. If I were to repeat this part of the project, I would probably have included some more research on uploading as well as talked a bit more about the problem in general and how it affects our lives, especially in our generation. Other than that, I do believe that I fulfilled my best in this and that it was a good investigation.

The designing part of this project really went by fast for me. The reason for this is that the only task that we were required to actually do was to make two storyboards. At the beginning, I can honestly say that I had absolutely no clue what storyboards even were. But, in that time, we went to the Week Without Walls and our project was to make a video, which used just about the same process as what we used in this project. From this, I learned how to make storyboards. Storyboards, as I learned, were basically simple drawings that needed to map out the ideas you have for the video that you are going to create. And so, with the approval of Mr.Jones, I decided to make my drawings out of stick figures to map out what I wanted to put into the video. I did two of these storyboards and chose the first to continue on with. I justified this by saying that this seemed the better choice since it explained it better and had a better chance of becoming a video would actually enjoy watching. If I were to repeat this part of the project again, I would probably put more effort into making the storyboards, and try to make a better layout of what I want to put into my video.

The planning part was also quite easy but this was because the teacher only required two tasks of us at this stage, which was to construct a timeline and a step-by-step plan. I will have to admit that I kept on delaying actually making the plan and ended up actually doing the plan whilst I was creating the video, which made the plan useless. And so, if I were to repeat this part of the project, I would definitely try to do it before I start creating my final outcome, thus making it much more useful.

Having finished the project, I am now able to evaluated how well I stuck the timeline that I had set myself:

Date

Description of the Step

Predicted Time

Actual Time

Comment

Week one

Investigate

One Week

One week

It was quite easy to research my topic.

Week two

More research

One week

One week

-

Week three

Storyboards

One week

3 days

This was the easiest part of the project as all I had to do was to map out exactly what I want on the video

Week four

Start making video

One week

One week

Week five

Continue on video

One week

One week

Week six

Finalize video

One week

Week and a half

This was hard as the video making software was hard to learn to use though I did what I think was my best.

Week seven

Evaluate

As you can see, I mostly was able to actually finish the tasks that I had set myself sometimes even before my deadline. The only time when I wasn’t able to do what I wanted in the time I wanted was when I was trying to finalize my video, but there were factors that stopped from doing this quickly and so I wasn’t able to do it as fast as planned, though I did upload it to the ning before the official deadline, which I consider to be a good achievement. So, as far the timeline is concerned, I kept my task to it quite well.

The create section of this project was definitely the most challenging. This was the first time that I had ever used iMovie, which made basics such as adding images, clips, transitions, voiceovers and text a bit more difficult at first, but later I got quite used to it. Really, the one part of this section of the project that really annoyed me was that I wanted to record a video of what I was doing on the computer screen and put it into my video to emphasize a few points. I used up about a lesson and half just trying to find the right software for this act. In the end, I did find a way, but it was quite difficult. A lesser challenge that I faced while creating the video was that there were certain parts of the video that I wanted to put a video effect to, as I would have in Windows Movie Maker. I couldn’t exactly find this, but after some experimenting, I found out a way to do it manually. So, making the video proved harder than I had anticipated and took longer than I had expected. If I were to repeat this part of the project, I would consider possibly different and easier software to deal with in creating the video. Other than that, I think I did very well in this area of the project.

I wasn’t able to put up a questionnaire on the ning with my video in order to get viewer comments. I really think that that would’ve been helpful for the future, and yet, due to time constraints, we weren’t able to do it, and that would be another addition to the project should I do something similar in the future.

This video has really had an impact on me. I now have learned quite a lot about how world has changed in the past couple of decades and can appreciate it more. This also leaves me anticipating more for the future. I personally hope that this video will also help others as it will also teach them what I have learnt and also make them be as aware of their changing world as I am.

I uploaded some information to the wiki about science, health, and environment. I personally feel that I said all that could be said about the relationship between this category and uploading, although, I feel that had I done some more research, I would’ve been able to add some more information. I really didn’t know what to add there to be honest but I think that what I added made sense. If I were to repeat this part of the project, I would probably try to add more to it.

This project has been a very interesting experience and I am proud to have contributed my video to it. I hope to do similar
